Default How is TOR different from WoW (Convince Me)

Hey all Star Wars and game lovers,
I have been looking forward to this game for a long long time, but as I think about getting involved in a mmo again, I begin to ask myself, "Is this going to be like WoW?".

Now I have seen a ton of these gameplay videos, my favorite being from TotalHalibut, and I still plan on getting this for Christmas and hooking up with some people from the forum, but before I really commit to this game, as I did WoW, I would like to know how it differs from the WoW-like genre. That is: gameplay, leveling, and PvP

Thanks and may the force be with you all

Its not that this game is like WoW, its that WoW and STWOR, as well as many other games are alike due to the fact that they are all MMORPGs. It just so happens that WoW is the one we all know so its what we think every other game is trying to be. Gameplay is amazing, the story lines blew my mind...it makes everything else fade into the background. I dont worry about the grind, I anticipate the story and enjoy every second of it...and this was just my beta time, launch will be that much better. All I can say is you should try it for yourself and you will know.

I'm not going to lie and say it's not like World of Warcraft, it's an MMO. It's like the differences between MW3 and BF3.

Gameplay will be a tad bit different this time around. There isn't an auto attack in this game, making combat a little more involved. Also, you have several new features that aren't dominant in most other MMO's, such as companions you can utilize and even influence, as well as a morality system that will actually make a difference. Leveling should be pretty similar to some of the newer players to WoW (players who started within the last 3 years) in a sense that if you continue to do quests, you will reach your level cap. It won't be the boring grind it was that us older WoW players are used to, by spending 6-12 hours per level grinding the same mobs. As far as PvP is concerned, I don't suppose I can really answer that question, and I doubt those of us who have been in the tests can as well, considering nobody has really had the opportunity to see it at max level.

    Hope that helps a bit.

This is absolutely true. WoW was the first mmo for the majority of gamers, so they think WoW has set the standard, and for a lot of people, it did. I'm glad I'm old enough so I don't count myself as one of those. I've played WoW for years, but it's not the end all and be all mmorpg as many people make it out to be. It has flaws found in every other mmorpg out there, but people seem to be blind about it since "hey, it's WoW!".
Ok.. enough about WoW.. guess I'm just starting to get tired it's always the same game that's brought up when a new mmo hits the market..

TOR is the same as any mmo, yet also very different...

The leveling system is the same as you find in most mmo's. Kill stuff, earn xp, level up, purchase new skills and spend skill points to improve in certain aspects. If you like WoW's leveling system with the 3 skill trees, you'll find yourself right at home here as it's very similar.
Gameplay wise, it's very different I think. Mainly because it has a much more attractive story then any other mmo. This game plays pretty much like a singleplayer game, giving you multiple ways to solve a mission. Instead of just blindly doing whatever the questgiver asks you to, you are given choices, something that's rather unique in the genre.
The missions themselves, are in essence, pretty common. Kill X ammount of enemy's, deliver this package to this location, interact with these and those object at this location, escort this npc, ... Basic things like you've seen in WoW as well. Except, the whole story around it makes it feel much more interesting.
Combat feels familiar, yet a lot more fun. (You also feel powerfull right of the bat, without the need to fight rats for the first 5 levels.) Combat requires a lot more thought then it did in WoW, it's not a button smasher, and a party member who's isn't paying attention during a dungeon run can get the team wiped in a hardbeat. I found the game a lot less forgiving to errors and mistakes.

Can't comment on pvp as I'll only play pve.

I started playing WoW during Vanilla as a 13 year old, so I have withstood the grinding of that game just so I can get that epic mount at 60, not 40 as it is now. To me, at least, the thing that grabs me in is the skillcap of the game. If you can be the best just through having the best armor and just mashing your nuke over and over again, that it really isn't fun is it. WoW, as it is now, is dead to me, It has nothing of a community that it used to, and its full of chinese farming services, 12 year old kids who see Chuck Norris in the commercials, or pricks who have 10 maxed characters and have heirlooms stacked on their characters.

I want TOR to help relive those moments that I loved so much as I did in Vanilla WoW, but have new aspects to it. What I love from what you guys said is the autoattack, the cover system, the difficulty (<-- I actually like being challenged in dungeons), and the storyline. So I guess this is, in a way, answers my question. If PvP turns out to be fun and balanced, all the better.

Yeah, I'm with you. It's a shame there isn't much anyone can say about the PvP yet, but don't fret. Most people should be able to get in as early as tomorrow, so there will hopefully be a bit more information known. I'm really curious how the PvP will flesh out in this game too, as it's usually one of my favorite things to do within these games.

I also agree with you about modern day WoW. By the time I quit (right before the Icecrown patch of WotLK), the only thing that kept me in was the hard modes, and even those were practically farmable because of how powerful the gear was.

I will probably get involved in this game, test it out over break, I have extremely high hopes. What kind of server and guilds will be associated with this forum?

I was originally working towards getting a guild prepared for the forum so that at least a group of us could be on the same server, but there wasn't enough interest to get it working in time. With my internet connection over the past year being as limited as it was (I have internet now, no longer a problem) it also strained getting things together.

Either way, I'll be going Sith on an RP-PvP server if at all possible.

I would just like to follow up on this, 5 days until I can play this game and I am wondering what realm are most people from the forum playing? I would love to group up/guild/ventrilo with some of you guys. Also, what classes would be most beneficial to your class. Thanks!

We are all on different servers due to time zones and start times. I would pick a server that will work best for your time zone...watch out for full servers.

Actually, there's a lot of WC people on my server, so if you're having difficulties with queue times, you can always hop aboard my server :P
