Introduction
Something I'd like to make a regular tradition here on JediTank, is to feature up to 5 guilds a month to take our part in recognizing the organized user base of TOR, as well as give back to the community by allowing them to show off what their guild is really about. In our first edition, we are presenting Jedi Weight Loss Clinic, a multifaceted up and coming guild that demonstrates a lax environment with the determination to get things done.
Jedi Weight Loss Clinic
Hi imapilotomg, we've found your guild on Star Wars: The Old Republic | COMMUNITY and have taken a keen interest in your guild. Let's get started with a few basic questions to formally recognize your guild, and then move to the more in-depth stuff.
Some of us prefer to be the good guy, while others prefer to be on the darker side of things. What alignment are you looking to present this guild as?
We don’t have an official alignment in this guild. We see both light and dark alignments as diverse tools that can be used to solve problems. Some problems require finesse and diplomacy, while others require some bones to be broken and vice versa; we use both.
Why did you choose to be Sith
I can’t speak for the rest of the guild but the reason why I chose Sith is because I agree with the Empire’s ambitious nature of planning something big and following through with it. The Empire went from this small group to an empire that’s able to challenge the Republic. Also the Imperial Agent stood out to me the most when I first found out about SWTOR back in December 2009.
When looking for a guild as a raw recruit, one of the things I personally look for is a guild that fits my needs in terms of play style. For example, I would prefer a guild that is flashpoint oriented, but also enjoys a lot of heavy PvP outside of scheduled raid times. How would you say your guild functions on a day to day basis in terms of this?
Flashpoints are a very big deal for me. I want to see how my character approaches its situation, the results of my choices, and so on. Our guild shares this same enthusiasm for flashpoints. Most of us are very big on PvP as well so we’ll set up a date and a time to where we all can play together. We also don’t neglect our PvE side so we’ll go on raids and do our side quests to soak in the atmosphere of SWTOR in its entirety.
Some games I've played have had good RP elements, while other suffered in this department. Considering the spectacular back story and following that Star Wars has to offer, I can heavily anticipate a lot of role play servers and guilds out there. What is your guilds take on RP?
Whatever works for you, do it. We’re not a guild dedicated to RP, and I know that many RPers would rather be with a community that shares their same passion. Our guild does appreciate the story elements of SWTOR, but we don’t consider roleplaying as our primary way of enjoying SWTOR. But if you are an RPer that wants to join our guild we won’t turn you down.
All types of organizations have to have some form of branding or just a place to...well...organize. Do you have a website that we can look at? Does this website have any function other than guild recruitment?
Yes we do have a website. It’s Jedi Weight Loss Clinic : Home : Star Wars The Old Republic (SWTOR) Guild Site at GuildPortal Though we’re changing the name to Jedi Weight Loss Clinic since Bioware informed us that they took suicide very seriously and asked us to change our name. Why they assumed we don’t take suicide seriously I have no idea. I use the site to inform the guild about future policies, a place where everyone can get to know each other, but we place no requirements on how often you should post. If you want to be here, naturally you’d show it. We also will be using the website as a place where you can submit your schedule to notify us when you have to work and I’ll use everyone’s schedules to plan events.
Some guilds I've seen have a rather militant structure in terms of their officers and members and how they correlate. What kind of structure does your guild have in effect? What are the terms of promotions?
We have a very small guild (and we plan to stay that way), so we don’t have an elaborate bureaucracy of ranks, positions, ect. I am the sole leader that gives power to whoever needs it. For example, let’s say we’re going to be doing a raid. I may not be good at this particular raid but another might be. I give that person the authority to lead the group and complete the mission. Or if I am absent and I need someone in control while I’m gone I’ll assign an Officer of the Day (OOD) someone so they’ll act in my stead. Promotions, as you might of guessed, don’t exist. In many guilds there are officers who don’t act like officers. Here if you want to have responsibility you’ll step up to the plate regardless of officer status.
I've seen restrictions when applying to guilds, and for the most part I agree with them. When looking for recruits, do you have any restrictions such as age, availability, other games played, etcetera?
We don’t have any restrictions based on age, availability, or MMO experience. Most (if not all) are very experienced in MMOs and some (myself included) come from top 10 guilds from other MMOS. So if we have someone who’s new to MMOs but wants to learn and puts forth the effort then we’ll take them in. Kids and teens are fine just so long as their parents understand what we’re all about (which can be found in the rules and regulations section of our website). I don’t want to calibrate a protective parent that heard a Vent conversation that they deemed rated R and decided to make an issue of it to me.
Though a word for the kids and teens that do join. Make sure you don’t participate in a raid or PvP session when you’re about to have dinner or go to bed so your team isn’t left high and dry.
I would think that recruiting for a guild effectively in a game that isn't to be released for several months would be difficult. How have you been advertising for recruitment?
Actually it’s been pretty easy since for the most part I’ve recruited my friends from past MMOs so we already have that core group. But for recruitment we posted our guild in the SWTOR website and received a few members that way. We’re very loose on quotas since we’re keeping it small. In game is where most of our recruiting will be done. We’ll build up a friend’s list and bring in the people we’re comfortable playing with. Then those people will bring their friends and so on. We’re going to keep the guild around 10-20 people so that we can have that tightly knit group and be in a position where nobody can join and just “disappear” among a sea of names in the roster. We also won’t have a ”guild within a guild” that you see so often with the larger guilds. Everyone is included, and everyone steps up. The weak links naturally fall out, but the ones who want to be here and participates with the guild stick around. And those are the ones that we want to recruit and keep. These types of players make up the Jedi Weight Loss Clinic.
Guild policies vary from guild to guild. Could you enlighten us with how strict you would say your guild is and what kind of policies you have in place?
Being small doesn’t require us to be a hard line guild, so we have very few policies. Here are our rules and regulations:These are pretty simple rules that allow the guild member to play naturally while having some light boundaries. Our Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) are equally straightforward. I’m the sole leader unless a second in command is needed for the time being. I intervene whenever necessary and everyone can contribute as much as they desire.
- We are an easy going and tightly knit group. As long as you aren't a douchebag or an idiot; you're good to go.
- You must be proficient in the English language.
- Must have a twisted sense of humor.
- Cannot be overly sensitive to constructive criticism or playful jesting.
- Throw away any notions of political correctness and sensitivity to oppressed social groups out the window.
Concerning crafting you’ll choose whatever crafting skill you want and specialize in it for the good of the guild. You can also take up multiple crew skills if you want. If the team member needs something crafted they’ll give the crafter what’s needed to make that item and it will be done without a service charge. Though if you want to forgo that requirement and make the item without asking for materials then that’s fine too.
As for events I’ll determine when we’ll go raiding or PvPing based on everyone’s schedule. We have members all over the U.S. and one in the U.K. so we’ll do our best to match your schedule but you also need to work with us as well.
Here at JediTank.com, we encourage guild leaders to be as strong as they can be in terms of leadership skills and offer private forums for the leaders and officers of TOR guilds to be able to discuss interpersonal issues and bounce ideas. Is this the kind of thing you'd be interested in participating in?
I wouldn’t mind participating in that. Diversity of opinion has its benefits.
